How to Type in Odia

Odia Typing is very easy with the method outlined below:

  1. Type in English as you would type messages on a mobile phone.
  2. Press the space bar, and it will convert to Odia.
  3. If you don't get the desired word, press the backspace key to open a word suggestion list from which you can choose another suitable word in the Odia language.
  4. Suggestion list will also appear when you click on a word with the mouse.
  5. Odia India Typing is a free and fastest method for typing in Odia, without the need to practice using an Odia keyboard.
  6. Type with your English keyboard and press space bar.
  7. Your English typed word will get converted to Odia.
  8. If you don't get the desired word, press the backspace key to get more suggestion words, and choose one from them. (To pop-up suggestion list, you can click on a particular word also)
  9. If your desired word is not found in the suggestion list, try other combinations of English letters. This Odia transliteration works on phonetics, so make English letter combinations as the sound vibrates from your mouth.

Odia (Oriya) Language

Odia (Oriya) is one of the very ancient languages in the world. It is spoken by approximately 60 million (6 crore) people worldwide. The language is primarily spoken in the Indian state of Odisha and in neighboring states.

The term "Oriya" comes from the ancient Sanskrit word "Odra." The Odrakas are mentioned as one of the people who fought in the Mahabharata. Odia is one of the oldest Indian languages belonging to the Indo-Aryan language family. It has been honored with the status of a "classical language" by the Indian government.

Extra Knowledge: What we speak is a language, so Odia is a language, and what we write is known as a script, so Kalinga is a script. We speak Odia and write or type in the Kalinga script.

Odia Alphabet

Odia is an abugida wherein all consonants have an inherent vowel embedded within. When vowels appear at the beginning of a syllable, they are written as independent letters. The Odia alphabet consists of 14 vowels and 50 consonants.

  1. Oriya language was spoken in India more than 2,500 years ago.
  2. The central government recognized the Oriya language as a classical language.
  3. The Oriya language begins to appear in inscriptions with Oriya scripts in temples, copper plates, palm-leaf manuscripts, etc., from the 7th century.
  4. The first Oriya printing typeset was cast in 1836 by Christian missionaries.
  5. The first Odia newspaper was Utkala Deepika, first published on 4 August 1866, now celebrated as Odia Journalism Day.
